Nigerian OAPs

Dear Nigerian OAPs, Give Us Back The Radio!

OAPs requesting incentives before spinning records on the radio is killing the music culture as the only artiste with big record label backing can cut the checks to get regular spins. This is somewhat a celebration of mediocrity. Young music creatives should be celebrated and not extorted as they offer what they create as contents for radio shows. When the opposite begins to happen, there needs to be an actual check in the royalty system. This pettiness by Nigerian OAPs should be made obsolete. As drastic measures by the appropriate bodies are carried out in curtailing these extortions.`

Douglas Jekan (Beat Fm), Kemi Smallz (Cool Fm), Osi Suave (Beat Fm), Dotun (Cool Fm), Segunemdin (Urban Fm), Gbemi (Beat Fm), Toolz (Beat Fm), Mannie (Cool Fm), and N6 (Cool Fm). If your name is not mentioned on this list, we should have a conversation. Music is said to be the soul’s medicine, and the process involved in getting a song out to the targeted audience has shown radio airplay as a very integrated part.
In 2016, we witnessed a major digression in the sounds, if it was due to urban influence or just a bunch of kids that got tired of listening to the regular, it was all the music scene needed at the time.
Starter pack for an upcoming or indie artiste drafted by the association of culture killing OAPs; a bottle of Henny, a pack of Cuban cigars, club 57, splash them money like strippers. If you don’t meet the starter pack criteria, your song is an obvious flush down the toilet leaving your audience with a constant thirst for your song.
The upcoming indie artist has had to resort to Soundcloud as an alternate savior in putting out their music, as the OAPS upcoming starter pack is playing a dominant role in the huge decline of artistes discovery.
OAPs are culture curators, but their desperate outcry to live the ‘Gucci Life‘ has seen them derailed from what they initially stand for. I might get a backlash for this or termed a business venture spoiler but someone has to attain the post of a big brother and do the calling out. Music needs ways to be aired out, the radio stands as a very strong avenue for this, yes the new kids are getting radio play by the OAPs active enough to fight for the new sound but we need this to be a general thing, OAPs should be excited to find new music without making the artist go through such rigorous acts just to give SHARE something they created with passion.
Some radio stations go as far as having a price list for the spin count you want your song to have, it’s appalling. Plugging music for the audience should be a more active and social affair and we expect the change to come soon as the Nigerian music scene from the new age is exploding and needs a larger audience and representation.
YOU OAPS SHOULD FIX UP YOUR LIVES, MUSIC NEEDS YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER!!
