At least 30 people were killed after gunmen attacked a community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday night, prompting the state government to impose a 48-hour curfew in the area.
Reports from residents, local officials, and media outlets said the attack took place in Angwan Rukuba, with multiple others injured.
It was reported that the attack happened in the Gari Ya Waye community of Angwan Rukuba district, where residents said gunmen opened fire on people indiscriminately. The shooting reportedly occurred around 8 p.m. at a popular bar in the community, with the death toll at least 30, while others state that the fatalities might have reached 40. Injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, according to the reports.
In response, the Plateau State Government announced a 48-hour curfew in Jos North beginning at midnight on March 29 and running until April 1. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the State Commissioner for Information, said the restriction was imposed in conjunction with security agencies after what the government described as a tragic security incident. Authorities said security measures were being intensified to apprehend those responsible.
Troops from Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace were deployed to the scene, with access routes to the community cordoned off and residents ordered indoors as a search operation began. The attackers were yet to be identified by the state government.
The violence also disrupted academic activities; The University of Jos suspended examinations scheduled to begin on Monday following the attack.
The attack is the latest in Plateau State, a region that has seen repeated deadly violence over land, identity, and access to resources. Despite the imposed curfew, residents took to the streets on Monday morning to decry the recurring killings and demand government intervention.
