Pressure is mounting on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, as political actors and groups call for his removal over alleged misconduct and loss of public confidence.
The caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the House of Representatives has formally demanded his sack, citing concerns over the credibility of the electoral body under his leadership. The lawmakers argue that restoring trust in Nigeria’s electoral system requires new leadership at the commission.
The calls have intensified following reports linking the INEC chairman to a controversial social media account allegedly making political statements. While the claims remain unverified, they have fueled public criticism and demands for accountability.
There are also indications that internal and political pressures could influence a possible leadership change at the commission, with reports suggesting that the odds may be shifting against Yakubu’s continued stay in office.
However, the situation remains divided. In Kogi State, a group of youths staged a show of support for the INEC chairman, dismissing the allegations against him as a smear campaign and warning against what they described as attempts to undermine the electoral body.
In response, INEC issued a statement denying the allegations, describing them as false and politically motivated. The commission said the chairman does not own or operate any account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary in any capacity.
INEC further stated that the claims form part of a broader pattern of misinformation and identity theft, noting that fake accounts have previously been created in the chairman’s name to mislead the public. The commission added that it is working with security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Despite the denial, reports suggest that pressure on the INEC leadership may be growing within political circles, with indications that the chairman’s continued stay in office could be under threat.
