According to The Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU, the 2018 Global Liveability Rankings has cleared the clout Lagosians are living in ranking Lagos, Africa’s most populous city and Nigeria’s largest commercial zone the third worst city to live in. Lagos was ranked 138th of the 140 countries ranked by the EIU in its 2018 report.
With a terribly low score of 38.5 percent out of an overall score of 100, Lagos was just a little above Syria’s war-torn capital, Damascus, and Bangladesh’s Dhaka.
Other African cities that featured on the index were Dakar (Senegal), which was ranked 131 out of 140; Algiers (Algeria) – 132; Doula (Cameroun) – 133; Tripoli (Libya) – 134 and Harare (Zimbabwe) – 135.
The Lagos goverment replied swiftly accusing the federal goverment for neglecting the city for years, though that’s a stupid excuse there’s a little bit of truth there.
If you read the report, it stated that the years of neglect and denial by the Federal Government has led to the poor state of infrastructure in Lagos State. The report commended Ambode administration for working tirelessly within three years to improve the level of infrastructure across the state. – The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, in an SMS to a Vanguard said.
In 2017, Lagos was ranked the second worst city to live in after Damascus which means there’s been little to no improvement in the state of things.
The annual list assesses stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure in 140 different cities of the world.
- In the Stability category, the following were considered: prevalence of petty crime, the prevalence of violent crime, the threat of terror, threat of military conflict and the threat of civil unrest.
- For Health rating, the following were considered: availability of private healthcare, quality of private healthcare, availability of public healthcare, quality of public healthcare and availability of over-the-counter drugs.
- Humidity/temperature rating, discomfort of climate to travellers, level of corruption, social or religious restrictions, level of censorship, sporting availability, cultural availability, food and drink and consumer goods and services were considered for the culture and rating.
- Availability of private education, quality of private education, public education indicators were used for the education rating.
