Liberian President Weah will Honour Arsene Wenger for developing his football career

Liberian president George Weah on August 24, National Flag Day will decorate Arsene Wenger and Claude LeRoy, the two French coaches who gave his football career an early boost.

Arsene and I will be decorated with the highest distinction of the country on August 24 in Monrovia”, Le Roy told AFP on Monday. He had signed to Tonnerre Yaounde and came to Cameroon national squad training even though he was a Liberian. I was dazzled by his talent and called Arsene,” said LeRoy who met the young Weah while managing Cameroon, he is currently coaching Togo.

Wenger took Weah from Africa in 1988 to play for Ligue 1 side Monaco, where the Frenchman was a manager at the time, after a tip-off from his compatriot Le Roy who first saw Weah playing in Cameroon. Weah went on to play for AC Milan, Paris St Germain, and Chelsea. In 1995 he was named World Footballer of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or, still the only African to win either award.

I remember when I saw him for the first time in Monaco, coming in a bit lost, not knowing anybody, not being rated by anybody as a player and after, in 1995, becoming the best player in the world. I would like to say this guy is an example for everybody who plays football today, for all the players, Wenger said in January.

Weah’s popularity from his footballing career helped him win a landslide run-off victory last December in Liberia’s presidential elections, Reuters reports.
