The federal government has increased its offer for the new minimum wage for workers from N60,000 to N62,000, Channels Television reports. The new figure was reached on Friday during a meeting between federal government representatives and labor leaders to discuss the new minimum wage.
Organized labor, however, has proposed a minimum wage of N250,000, TheCable reports. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, after an earlier meeting, stated that the tripartite committee on the minimum wage is close to reaching a consensus. Uzodimma expressed confidence that a concrete agreement would be reached “in a few minutes.”
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) began an indefinite strike on Monday over the federal government’s failure to meet their demand for a new minimum wage. The industrial action was relaxed for one week on Tuesday to allow negotiations with the government to continue.
Negotiations resumed on Thursday. Labor initially proposed N615,500 and N494,000 as the new national minimum wage, which the government deemed unrealistic. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) stated that the N60,000 minimum wage for workers is not sustainable.
