In 2018, Boko Haram kidnapped more than 100 girls in the northeastern Nigerian town of Dapchi. And six years ago, in 2014, the same group abducted more than 270 girls in the town of Chibok.
Late last week, more than 300 schoolboys were taken by gunmen who attacked a secondary school in Kankara, a town in Nigeria’s northwestern Katsina state, authorities said. Attackers on motorcycles stormed the all-boys Government Science School late on Friday and engaged security forces in a fierce gun battle, forcing hundreds of students to flee and hide in the surrounding forest.
Nigeria has a major Security issue plaguing the nation for years now. There are fewer than 400,000 police officers for Nigeria’s population of more than 180 million people and most of the officers are responsible for protecting VIPs such as politicians, businessmen, and other wealthy individuals. Nigeria’s military also seems overwhelmed by numerous security challenges. In 2016, the army chief announced that the number of troops would be doubled to 200,000 during the coming years. Despite this announcement and contrary to claims that the army is making progress, Boko Haram is still terrorizing northeastern Nigeria. It has been doing so for eight years.
A recent Afrobarometer survey found that the police force is perceived as Nigeria’s most corrupt institution. Sixty-nine percent of respondents said all or most police officers were venal.
The hashtag #BringBackOurBoys was trending on social media in Nigeria on Sunday as public outrage grew about an attack that initially saw 600 boys missing.
Defence Minister Major General Bashir Salihi-Magash, who met Masari, the governor, said the military will pursue the attackers and rescue the students without any collateral damage.
“We will go the whole hog. We have the intelligence, the information where they are and their movement and their method of operation.”said Salihi-Magash.
Once again, President Muhammadu Buhari proves how terrible his government has been in dealing with issues. The serving president has not said anything that directly helps the situation of the parents who’ve currently lost their sons to terrorists. The president is currently dey Daura, Katsina State, on vacation, was on fire on social media for failing to visit the school where the boys suffered the attack. Buhari instead sent a delegation from Abuja to visit the school and sympathize with the parents.
