Growing up as a 90s kid meant watching what is now called ‘The Golden Era Of Nollywood’. This era is characterized by overdramatized, cheaply produced, averagely shot–sometimes low-quality CGI–films. As a result, birthed present-day stars like Genevieve Nnaji, Tonto Dike, meme sensations Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze, RMD, Jim Iyke, and many others.
The resurgence of this age and love of Nollywood can be attributed to social media accounts like ‘Yung Nollywood’ on twitter or ‘Nollybabes’ on Instagram. The accounts are run by Nigerians who randomly share memes and clips from classic Nollywood films that the current generation finds amusing but also in tune with their ‘Alte‘ approach to certain aspects of culture.
