Known as one of the most anticipated events in the Nigerian music industry, the Headies has been celebrating outstanding talents and even been a launchpad for emerging stars.
This illustrious award show has served as a night of celebration and unity of luminaries who have provided the most notable moments defining what we know as- the Headies. Below are some unforgettable and nostalgic flashbacks of previous editions of the show:
- BNXN winning a Bentley
The “Next rated category” is one of the most anticipated and coveted categories at the Headies Awards. This category celebrates artists who have made significant impacts in the industry and show a promising future of becoming a major star. Daniel Benson (BNXN) was selected as the next rated artist in 2022 ahead of Ayra Starr, Zinoleesky, Ruger and Lojay, which came along with the prize of a Bentley Bentayga that caused much fanfare from his supporters and detractors alike.
- D’banj performs in a towel in 2005 and Bovi recreates the moment a decade later
Around 2005, D’banj was one of the hottest artists with the catchy tune “Why Me” gaining popularity across the country. The legendary artist who is known for his charismatic presence, dynamic dance steps and massive stage presence performed in a towel across his waist. His choice of outfit puzzled the audience while also capturing them with his high-energy performance.
10 years later, Bovi recreated this moment with a towel across his waist, surprising the audience and those old enough to get the reference of this iconic moment.
- Burna Boy walks out of the award show as Sean Tizzle was announced as the Next Rated Artist
The Next Rated is one of the most valuable categories for the award show. Burna Boy, Sean Tizzle, Phyno, Seyi Shay and Dammy Krane were all up against each other in 2013. Sean Tizzle was announced as the winner which made Burna Boy walk out of the show as this did not go well with the singer.
- Wizkid’s O2 concert falls under the same day as the 2019 Headies awards
In 2019, Wizkid was holding a highly anticipated concert at the O2 arena in London which attracted fan from all over the world. However, the 2019 edition of the Headies Awards fell at the same night. The timing of these two events caused a clash which made Wizkid absent as well as the absence of many stars who opted for the concert. This drew attention and sparked conversations among fans and the media.
- Olamide and Don Jazzy clash at the 2015 Headies
This is by far the most unforgettable event and the moment which comes to mind whenever the Headies is mentioned. Olamide’s artist “Lil Kesh” was nominated for this category but this was ultimately given to Mavin Records artist “Reekado Banks”. Olamide expressed his frustration when he took the stage at what he believed was a bias in favor of the Mavin Records artist. In response to this, Don Jazzy came on stage to accept this on behalf of Reekado banks in which he fired back. This incident created a lot of buzz in the Nigerian music industry.
