Best New Music: Køkø Releases Laid Back Afrobeat EP ‘Akira’

Akira EP by Køkø is a five-track afrobeats project with laid back throaty vocals crooning about love in a mix of Yoruba and English over melodic drums and even piano sounds. Køkø sings about having a good time and wanting more despite him just being her go.

On the title track Akira, Køkø sings about being fed up and tired of the chase but still ready to give anything. Monalisa has one of the two features on the project, with Trobulsome, who brings the party vibe, simple piano chords, and drums reminiscent of Julz’s Colours and a seamless beat switch towards the end.

Cona Cona! continues with the party vibe, adding a saxophone and lyrics about being dumped but with a chorus still wanting to be Shade’s “baby father and can you be my baby mama”. Luv Badgals features Buju who delivers a lovely verse.

On Good Enough, the last song on the EP and a major standout Køkø, relies on drums and a guitar loop that creates a laid-back reflective mood as he questions if he is worthy of his lover’s affection even despite her reassurances.

Akira EP leans heavily towards being a party project and falls short on lyrics on some songs for vibes and melody but despite this Køkø sticks to the central theme of the project, with Akira and Good Enough making up for what the other songs lack lyrically.
