The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert warning Nigerians about falsified and unregistered batches of Dostinex currently in circulation.
According to the agency, the affected product, Dostinex (cabergoline) tablets, is being distributed without proper registration and does not meet regulatory standards.
CABERGOLINE (ca BER goe leen) treats high prolactin levels in your body. Prolactin is a hormone that helps regulate the menstrual cycle, lactation, and fertility. Too much prolactin may cause infertility, changes in sex drive or performance, and bone loss. This medication works by decreasing levels of prolactin in your body.
NAFDAC stated that investigations revealed specific batches of the medicine were not registered in its database, raising concerns about their authenticity, safety, and quality. The agency warned that the circulation of such products poses serious health risks to patients who rely on the medication for treatment.
The regulatory body has directed healthcare providers, pharmacists, distributors, and the general public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any stock in their possession. It also urged members of the public to report suspected falsified medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Counterfeit and unregistered pharmaceuticals remain a persistent challenge in Nigeria’s drug supply chain. Health authorities have repeatedly cautioned that falsified medicines can lead to treatment failure, worsening medical conditions, adverse drug reactions, and, in some cases, life-threatening complications.
NAFDAC said enforcement teams have been mobilised to trace and remove the affected batches from circulation. The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health through surveillance, inspections, and regulatory action against violators.
Patients currently using Dostinex have been advised to confirm that their medication is properly registered and sourced from licensed pharmacies.
