Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu has announced on Monday that EbonyLife Place London will open on Wandsworth Road as the UK’s first cinema dedicated exclusively to African and Black films. She shared the news herself, posting a video tour of the space to her page.
“EbonyLife Place London will become the first cinema in the United Kingdom dedicated exclusively to African and Black films, while also creating a vibrant cultural hub celebrating our fashion, music, food and art,” she said in the post.
The site will house more than screens. According to Abudu, it includes a Grand Reception, The Afrobeat Restaurant, Fèhintì Lounge, Maji Concession & Bar, Zuri Retail, and The Living Wall Gallery — a mix of dining, retail and gallery space built around the cinema at its centre.
It’s an expansion of a brand that already has a foothold at home. EbonyLife Place has operated in Lagos for several years as a cinema and lifestyle complex, and the London outpost extends that model into a market with a large, established African and Caribbean population; one that has rarely had a dedicated venue built specifically around African film and culture rather than absorbing it into broader “world cinema” or diaspora programming.
Abudu has built her career on this kind of infrastructure play; owning the space rather than negotiating for a slot within someone else’s. EbonyLife Place London is the clearest sign yet that she intends to take that approach beyond Nigeria’s borders. No further details have been released on programming, partnerships, or opening-week plans.
