What Nigerians Are Asking Google About Sex

Nigerians search for sex all year round, and the questions attached to it say a lot about what people are worried about. Here is what 12 months of Google Trends data shows.

Interest in sex never cools

On Google Trends, interest in the word “sex” never dropped below 78 on its 100-point scale in any week of the past 12 months, peaking at 100 in early July. The states with the highest share of searches are Rivers, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, followed by Plateau and Ebonyi.

Pregnancy tests and the morning-after pill come first

In one comparison, “pregnancy test” averaged 83 and “postinor” 68, against 22 for “hiv test”, 16 for “erectile dysfunction” and 15 for “sex positions”. Postinor searches are highest in Ekiti, Kwara, Ondo, Osun and Adamawa, and the rising related searches include “postinor 2 usage” (up 100%) and “post pill drug” (up 90%). The World Health Organization says levonorgestrel emergency contraception should be taken as early as possible and within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sex, that it works better the sooner it is taken, and that it cannot end an established pregnancy.

The pill is a regular topic on X too.

Masturbation worries are growing fast

“Masturbation side effects for women” grew by 950%, “does masturbation causes infertility” by 800%, “masturbation side effects for men” by 600% and “does masturbation affect the brain” by 250%. In a separate comparison, masturbation averaged 45, orgasm 37, condom 25 and clitoris 16.

Many people are looking up definitions

“Difference between ejaculation and orgasm” grew by 120%, “what’s an orgasm” by 100% and “how to make a woman reach orgasm” by 70%. “Clitoris meaning in english” grew by 450%.

Condom and HIV questions are breaking out

“How to wear a condom for male” and “latex condom allergy symptoms” were both flagged by Google as breakout searches, which means growth too large to put a percentage on. So was “can hiv be transmitted through saliva”. The answer is no. Medical News Today says HIV is not transmitted through saliva or closed-mouth kissing, and that the risk from oral sex is “extremely low”. The fluids that can carry it are blood, semen and pre-seminal fluid, rectal and vaginal fluids, and breast milk.

Position searches are really about pregnancy

“Sex positions that prevent pregnancy” grew by 600%, and “sex positions for beginners” was a breakout. No position prevents pregnancy. Love Matters Naija lists this among the Nigerian sex myths it debunks, along with sex in water, jumping after sex and drinking local gin.

Where masturbation searches are highest

Masturbation has the largest share of searches in Yobe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Ekiti and Ondo. Trends measures relative interest and not volume, so a high score in a smaller state does not mean more people.

Lasting longer beats every other how-to

“How to last longer in bed” averaged 34, against 5 for “how to give head” and 1 for “how to eat pussy”. It is searched most in Edo, Lagos, the FCT, Rivers and Abia. Its rising version, “how to last longer in bed without drugs”, was a breakout, and so was “how to cure erectile dysfunction permanently”.
