Murja Kunya is currently facing trial for charges related to misdemeanor, improper conduct, and immoral behavior, which are said to contravene Islamic moral codes. A High Court in Kano State recently issued a ban preventing her from appearing on any social media platforms.
This decision has sparked criticism from many who argue that it infringes upon her right to free speech. Justice Nasiru Saminu issued the ban while ruling on her bail application, as confirmed by Baba Jibo Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the Kano State High Courts.
Murja Kunya, a popular Tiktoker, was arrested by the Hisbah (Islamic police) and has been in prison since February 20, 2024. Justice Saminu granted her bail after considering her application, setting the bail amount at N500,000 with two sureties. One of the sureties must be a blood relative, while the other must own property within Kano metropolis.
The judge justified the bail decision by noting that Murja had already spent more than 30 days in prison. As a condition of her bail, she is prohibited from using any social media platforms until the case is resolved. The Commissioner of Police was instructed to arrest her if she violates this restriction.
The case is scheduled to resume on May 16 for further proceedings.
