Ayomide Bello Becomes Nigeria’s First Gold Medalist at an International Water Sports Event

Last week, canoeist Ayomide Bello made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win the top prize at an international water sports competition since the Nigeria Rowing, Canoe and Sailing Federation (NRCSF) was formed.

Ayomide, took home the gold medal at the Open International Canoe Sprint Competition in India, coming in first place in the final of the 200 meters event.

Nigerian Sports publication Brila reports that Ayomide achieved the feat in India, where she took part in the final of the 200 metres event. The champion also won a bronze medal in a different individual category before snatching two more bronze medals in two team events alongside her mate, Amusar Blessing.

“The federation is proud of the achievement of the athletes in India and we hope they will do more in other international engagement,” Secretary of the NRCSF, Bunmi Oluode told the News Agency of Nigeria according to The Sun.

Their success means that Team Nigeria left the competition with a total of four medals.

Ayomide will be heading to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo next with her eyes set on the top prize once again.
