The price of cooking gas, also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas, has increased for some days following a massive shortage in some states in Nigeria. This shortage has made many express disappointment, form long queues, and raise complaints on social media. Reports indicate that the price of cooking gas per kilogram ranges from ₦1,800 to ₦3,500.
This shortage became severe by the end of September and the start of October 2025, following the directive given by PENGASSAN (Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria).
On September 26, 2025, PENGASSAN ordered major oil and gas companies to cease delivering crude and gas to Dangote refinery, halt vessel loading operations, and cut gas supply to Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC). The union stated that this action was in response to Dangote Refinery’s dismissal of 800 workers who were seeking to unionize.
Meanwhile, Dangote Refinery responded to PENGASSAN by stating that the dismissals were part of a reorganization aimed at improving safety and operational efficiency.
States that have raised complaints about the cooking gas shortage include Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Cross River.
