The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the arrival of United States troops in Bauchi State.
According to the report, the military high command announced that the US personnel are in the country as part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. While details of the deployment remain limited, officials said the presence of American troops is tied to joint training and capacity-building efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
It was earlier indicated that cargo planes linked to the US military were sighted landing in Nigeria, fuelling speculation about a possible foreign troop presence. The Defence Headquarters’ confirmation appears to validate those reports, although authorities insist the deployment is not a combat mission but part of bilateral military collaboration.
The arrival of American troops has been described as a potential boost to Nigeria’s security operations, particularly as the country continues to grapple with terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across several regions. Former senator Shehu Sani criticised those opposing the US troop presence, arguing that Nigeria needs practical support to tackle worsening insecurity. He suggested that resistance to foreign assistance should not override the urgency of addressing violence affecting communities nationwide.
The US and Nigeria have long maintained defence ties, including intelligence sharing, training programmes, and equipment support. Still, the presence of foreign troops on Nigerian soil raises sovereignty concerns and memories of past debates about foreign military bases in the country.
Authorities have not disclosed how long the US troops will remain in Bauchi or the specific scope of their activities. For now, officials maintain that the move is part of a structured partnership and not an open-ended deployment.
