Ekiti State Tragedy: School Pupils Kidnapped, Two Monarchs Killed in One Day

In a shocking turn of events, Ekiti State, Nigeria, experienced a double tragedy on Monday, January 29, 2024. Some primary school pupils attending Apostolic Faith School were allegedly kidnapped by armed bandits alongside their head teacher and a driver; and two monarchs were killed in separate incidents.

The incident caused panic among residents in the separate town, who are now appealing to security agencies for protection. The victims (school pupils) were kidnapped after school hours in Emure, Ekiti State. According to one of the sources who spoke to The Gazette, “The pupils were kidnapped while going to Eporo Ekiti from Emure on their school bus”.

Two prominent monarchs in the Ikole local government area of Ekiti State were allegedly ambushed and killed by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. The monarchs were returning from Ogbe, a neighboring town in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, when the gun-wielding men struck from a bush between the border communities of the state and Ekiti.

The victims were Oba Ogunsakin and Oba Olatunji, while the Alara of Ara-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba, escaped from the scene

Governor’s Response

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has ordered security agencies in the state to fish out the killers of the two traditional rulers. He stated, “no stone will be left unturned in the bid to bring the perpetrators to justice”. The governor’s statement was contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, on Monday, January 29, 2024.
