European Union introduces integrated work and residency permits for third-country nationals

The European Union has taken steps to simplify and streamline the process for third-country nationals to work and live within its borders. The European Parliament and Council have agreed on a revised Single-Permit Directive, which allows non-EU nationals to obtain both work and residence permits through a single application.

EU officials have welcomed the new regulations, seeing them as a way to establish a comprehensive and fair migration system. Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life, believes that these rules will contribute to a robust migration system in the EU. Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, emphasized the importance of legal migration for the EU’s economic growth.

The unified work and residence permits offer several benefits, including simplifying the application process by introducing a unified procedure. This eliminates the need for multiple applications and reduces bureaucratic complexities. Additionally, the updated directive grants a standardized set of rights to non-EU workers, covering aspects such as qualification recognition, working conditions, social security, and tax benefits. This aims to create a fair and equal playing field for all workers.

Furthermore, the European Commission sees these permits as crucial in addressing labor shortages across various EU sectors. By aligning the labor market’s needs with the right talents, the Commission hopes to stimulate innovation and economic growth.
