Virgil Abloh’s Freedom Skatepark in Ghana is at Risk of Closure Due to a Land Dispute

The Freedom Skatepark in Ghana, designed by Virgil Abloh, is facing closure after just two years of operation. The skatepark, which was created to provide a safe space for young people to skate and express themselves, has been a popular destination for local and international skaters. However, the park’s future is now uncertain due to land disputes.

According to Surf Ghana, they have been tenants of the land they paid for over 10 years and have been embroiled in a nine-month struggle to access the skatepark they built. Regrettably, there are opportunistic individuals attempting to exploit the successful community project for their own gain.

The Freedom Skate Park refuses to yield and is committed to peacefully moving ahead, creating a safer space for the youth, and continuing to make a positive impact.

The skatepark was built in 2022 as part of a collaboration between Abloh’s fashion brand, Off-White, and the local community in Accra. The park was designed to be a hub for creativity and self-expression, focusing on empowering young people through skateboarding. It has hosted numerous events and workshops, including a skateboarding competition that attracted participants from across the continent.
