When one tries to describe an all-round creative and talented person, then they would be describing Ediongsenyene Umoren, known best as 8notes. From the creeks and rainforests of south-southern Nigeria to the bright night lights of the United Kingdom, 8notes has managed to retain his originality through the music that he makes.

He is a mix engineer and producer who has been making music since 2012 but began mixing professionally in 2015; and even beyond all of these, 8notes would primarily prefer to be profiled as a problem solver above anything else.

“When I mix songs, it’s an engineering process. My job requires me to identify problems in the art and fix them. I have to listen from the perspective of a consumer and that makes me both a creator and a consumer at the same time. It’s the best job in the world!”

8notes is popular for having worked with the biggest names in African music by producing “Oso Ga Ene” for Phyno, mixing and mastering Reekado Banks’ “Lupita Nyongo”, “Dorime” for Teni and having other mixing works with Zlatan, Laycon, Kuami Eugene, Jaysynths, Jeff Akoh, Sinzu, Dremo, and other interesting names in the scene and he thinks Afrobeats will get even bigger.

With breakout artistes from the continent and especially Nigeria taking over the global stage, 8notes believes that it is only the beginning.

He says: “Afrobeats is based on fusion and this makes it very easy for us to adapt to any market at any time. So the genre can never die. It’ll only evolve over time and blend into the very core of pop music from Africa.”
