Lady Donli Aka Cash Mummy Reigns Supreme in Nollyesque Music Video For ‘Corner’

/

Lady Donli had an amazing run last year after the release of her project ‘Enjoy You Life’, which thrilled fans and critiques alike firmly placing her amongst Nigeria’s top artists from the new age.

The Fader described the 15-track debut album as a ‘blend of high life, neo-soul, classic afrobeat, and funk that told stories that span from her upbringing in Nigerian capital Abuja to advocating for self-love.

For her first move of the new decade, Donli releases the video for ‘Corner’ Featuring Cavemen & Vanjess, one of the stand out tracks from the album.

The video, is both powerful, visually pleasing and carries a strong Nollywood theme which can be seen in the styling. Donli uses her video to touch on #SexForGrades, a viral hashtag that talked about university teachers who slept with their students for high grades. Highlighting the social climate most women have to face in school.

My vision for the film was to make a melodrama, a Nollywood home video that possesses multiple layers and juxtapositions. The most telling, being the intention to show that we (the younger generation) are well aware of societal and cultural issues — especially for women. I’m more than willing to inculcate that into the art.

Director of the video Shaun Kalu talks about the concept behind it.
