At least 10 people were killed on Tuesday in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, in a series of blasts that rocked a crowded market.
The incident occurred within the Bakara market, sources informed Al Jazeera.
Three nurses at Erdogan Hospital in Mogadishu confirmed to Reuters that more than 20 injured individuals had been admitted to the facility.
Mohamed Ali, a businessman in the market who assisted in carrying the dead and wounded from some of the shops, recounted to Al Jazeera: “We heard four huge explosions erupt inside four well-known electronic shops and we were shocked. We’ve seen so many people crying inside shops.”
Somali police have stated that investigations are underway.
The cause of the blasts was not immediately clear, but the al-Qaeda affiliated group al-Shabab is known for carrying out bombings in densely populated areas across the country.
Al-Shabab has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with Somalia’s federal government and an African Union (AU)-mandated peacekeeping force, aiming to establish a new government based on its interpretation of Islamic law.
