RayTheBoffin is Building a Sonic World of His Own

RayTheBoffin is one of the most exciting artists of his generation. The Abuja-based artist, producer, and visual creator has built a reputation in Afro-fusion with emotionally charged music and genre-blending production.

His latest self-produced project, You Make Me Feel, released in May 2025, represents a bold artistic evolution. It is an intimate exploration that positions RayTheBoffin not just as a musician but as a sonic architect and emotional provocateur, blending genres, cultures, and the complex emotions that define our shared human experience.

What inspired you make me feel, and what emotions or experiences were you trying to capture with it?

you make me feel explores different emotions and feelings that are experienced when people are attracted to each other, you know, like infatuation, infidelity, reconciliation, lust, love…”

You self-produced, engineered, and designed the album’s artwork. What was that like for you? How did this process shape the album?

“I actually enjoy the process,” he shares. “I love creating, and I’m multifaceted, so I love doing other stuff. I like expressing myself with other mediums you know, not just music. Doing stuff like this helps me to explore other things I like: design and even creative direction. My projects are the perfect playground for me. That really shapes the way the project comes out—there is a piece of me in every part of it.”

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

“I always say that’s a tough question to answer,” he admits. “But I would say it is an experience. It’s unique, alternative, and I love me some bounce.”

You worked with artists like Suté Iwar, Tim Lyre, DAP The Contract, and Inçi. What was it like to work with so many people for the project, and what were some peculiarities and similarities with each artist?

“I love community. I like collaborations. I like making art with people. I like the process. I like making friends in that process and being part of a bigger community. And every artist that I worked with in this project is very unique in their own way.”

“My sound is already different. For an artist to say yes to any collaboration with me, it means that artist, in my opinion, it means the artist is bold and, you know, ready to explore an experiment, and I think that is something that is similar in all the artists I’ve worked with.”

What’s the “the spirit of the underground,” and how do you see yourself within that space in Nigeria’s music scene?

“The underground spirit is for people who want to break free from the norm and be themselves. Be authentic as they can be, to be free to experiment, to put out their art in its true form. I think that’s what the underground scene is about—that’s the underground spirit. The freedom of creativity. I hope that when people listen to my music and see how cool it is, it opens up the way for them to experiment and to be themselves as well.”

This album has been described as emotionally honest. Are there personal moments or stories that stood out for you when making this project?

“The stories in my project are usually inspired by either real-life events or events that happened with my friends.” “I am just going to leave everyone guessing on which ones are personal,” he teases.

Your latest album blends Afro-fusion, Jersey Club, Amapiano, and R&B. Would you consider your versatility to be your greatest strength?

“I wouldn’t say versatility is my greatest strength. It is a good strength to have, but I think my greatest strength is being able to express myself freely. If I feel like making an Afro song today, I make one; if I feel like making Jersey Club tomorrow, I will make one. And I could be going through the same thing, you know, but I just feel like expressing it in a different way today. I think my greatest strength is my curiosity.”

What’s next for RayTheBoffin? Where do you see your music going next, and are there any genres or projects you’re excited to explore?

“We are just getting started. There’s a lot of things I want to explore outside music and in music, and there are a lot of genres I want to try.”

“I have some I’m already working on. I love being curious, I love to keep exploring, and I really want to make an impact in the alternative scene and to show everyone that you can be yourself and also be great!”
