Music Videos in Africa’s renaissance of creativity have improved a lot more with better coordinated conceptual videos that give meaning, visuals with a message that helps understand the song better telling a story the artist is trying to convey through his words, lens and your screen.
A few artists around Africa released or featured in videos we’re currently watching.
M.anifest – Azumah Nelson Flow
M.anifest is one of Ghana’s most conscious, creative and versatile rapper which he shows in his storytelling. His second visual this year is for his single ‘Azumah Nelson Flow‘ which dropped last year. M.anifest pays tribute to Ghana’s greatest boxer, the video opens with a clip of Azumah Nelson swearing he’s the best boxer in the world before going on to prove it.

Darkovibes – Bangers Feat. AYAT
La Meme Gang founding member Darkovibes released the visual to his hit ‘Bangerz‘ which features fellow Ghanian rapper Ayat. It’s another classic visual story from the La Meme Collective, bringing out their entire squad to party and flex.
Kwesi Arthur – No Title
Ground Up Chale gem Kwesi Arthur released a single earlier this year called ‘No Title’, he talks about his journey up the mainstream, proving his loyalty to the day ones who’ve been with him from the start. He recently shot a video for the single in Los Angeles.
tobi lou – The Blue
Tobi Lou, who’s the brother of writer Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian rapper based in the Chicago known for his quirky, off the top and magical flow. His videos typically have him in fantasy like worlds where he can explore and interact with his world in ways cooked up in his mind or theme of the song. His new video ‘The Blue‘ is no different.
Rudimental & Major Lazer – Let Me Live (feat. Anne-Marie & Mr Eazi)
Major Lazer and Rudimental come together to make an afro beat themed electro jam and got it incredibly well with help from Nigerian pop star Mr. Eazi & UK singer Anne-Marie, known for her song “Friends” with Marshmello. The video is directed by South Africa’s Chris Saunders and was filmed in Johannesburg featuring local dancers. The tune also features additional choral vocals from five-time Grammy-winning South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Falz – Child Of The World
Falz broke the internet when he released his remake of Donald Glover’s ‘This Is America’, ‘This Is Nigeria’. He’s back with a video for ‘Child of The World‘ off his third studio album. The song touches on issues of rape, HIV, depression, suicide, and hope. The visual story was beautifully shot by Kemi Adetiba and it’s another classic video from the rapper.

MI Abaga – Brother ft. Nosa & Milli
MI has us on a time machine with the release of the video for his 2014 track dedicated to ‘Jesse Jagz & Ice Prince’, titled ‘Brother’.
