With another strong performance on the track, Tobi Amusan delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 24th African Athletics Championships held in Accra, Ghana.
The sporting event which brought together athletes from 54 African countries, took place from May 12 to May 17, 2026. This featured top track and field athletes competing across various disciplines, with medals awarded in each category over the course of the six-day competition.
Amusan claimed victory in the women’s 100 metres hurdles, securing gold for Nigeria in one of the competition’s headline track events. She delivered a composed performance in the final, maintaining control over the race from the early stages and finishing ahead of a strong field of competitors.
Oluwatobiloba Ayomide “Tobi” Amusan has established herself as one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in international athletics, with a record of success at both continental and global levels. She won the 2018 Commonwealth Games title and the 2018 African Championships title in the 100 metres hurdles. On the Diamond League circuit, she won the Diamond League Trophy in Zurich in 2021, confirming her ability to compete and win against top-ranked international athletes.
Her latest victory in Accra adds another title to her record and strengthens Nigeria’s presence in sprint hurdling events at the African Championships. The result continues her consistent run of form in major competitions and contributes valuable points and recognition for Nigeria on a global stage.
