On May 15, armed assailants reportedly stormed three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. According to early security and local reports, the attackers abducted about 39 pupils, aged between 2 and 16 years, along with seven teachers.
The incident has been widely described as one of the most disturbing school attacks in the region in recent times, especially given the number of very young children taken during school hours.
The situation escalated further when reports emerged that Michael Oyedokun was killed, with evidence of a video of the act being circulated online. The footage was allegedly used to send a warning to security operatives involved in planned rescue efforts. Authorities have not independently verified all circulating content, but the reports have intensified public fear and pressure on security agencies to act quickly.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, said the state government is prepared to engage with the abductors to secure the safe return of the victims.
At the federal level, President Bola Tinubu directed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to lead a coordinated, technology-driven rescue operation to locate and recover the abducted pupils and teachers. Security agencies have also arrested individuals suspected of acting as informants linked to the attackers, as investigations continue.
As the incident spreads across social media, different narratives have emerged. Some online commentators have attempted to link the attack to broader political tensions in the country, including claims connected to Governor Makinde’s alleged presidential ambitions. Others point to resurfaced past political statements and tweets, using them to frame the attack within national political rivalries. However, these claims remain unverified and largely speculative, with security concerns still the central issue.
Across Nigeria, there have been intense calls for stronger protection of schools and rural communities. Parents and citizens continue to demand action and clearer communication from authorities as the situation develops. For many, the violent attack adds to a growing list of security challenges affecting different parts of the country.
