The organizers of Lagos Fanti Carnival 2026 have announced the return of the historic cultural celebration themed ‘A Homecoming of Heritage’, set to take place on Easter Monday, April 6, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square.
Hosted by the Brazilian Descendants Association in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the festival celebrates the enduring cultural ties between West Africa and Brazil while spotlighting the historic communities of Lagos Island that have preserved this legacy for generations.

Rooted in nineteenth-century traditions introduced by Afro-Brazilian returnees known as the Aguda, the Lagos Fanti Carnival reflects over a century of cultural continuity and public celebration in Lagos. Inspired by Brazilian carnival traditions and shaped by local communities such as Lafiaji, Isale-Eko, Olowogbowo, Campos, Epetedo, Okepopo, and Okoo-Faji, the festival has evolved into a vibrant symbol of Lagos’ multicultural identity.
The 2026 edition expands the carnival into a multi-layered cultural platform that will include:
- A street carnival procession across Lagos Island
- A curated heritage exhibition
- The Afro-Brazilian Economic Summit
- A closing concert and live cultural performances
Following the successful revival of the festival in 2025, which attracted thousands of participants and extensive media coverage, organizers project that the 2026 edition will draw more than 25,000 attendees, with global livestream audiences expected to exceed 80,000 viewers.

Speaking ahead of the announcement, organizers noted that the theme, ‘A Homecoming of Heritage’, reflects a broader effort to reconnect contemporary audiences with the shared histories between Africa and Brazil that continue to shape Lagos today.
“Lagos Fanti Carnival is not only a celebration; it is a living archive of migration, resilience, and cultural exchange,” the organizers said. “Through this platform, we aim to preserve these traditions while inviting new audiences to engage with the rich heritage of Lagos Island.”
The event will bring together historic carnival associations representing Afro-Brazilian descendant communities across Lagos Island, alongside cultural performers, scholars, policymakers, and international audiences.
By expanding the carnival into a city-scale cultural platform, Lagos Fanti Carnival 2026 seeks to strengthen Lagos’ position as a destination for heritage tourism while amplifying the global relevance of Afro-Brazilian cultural exchange.
