MNOV is Carving Space for Intimacy Amidst the Noise

//

MNOV is the necessary disruption reclaiming the soul in Nigerian music with ‘Here.’

The music industry is overcrowded. We are living through an era of constant noise, where the pressure to be loud often overrides the need to be honest. In a move that mirrors the chaos of social media, New Music Friday has become a frantic race for attention, with every artist trying to outshout the next. We have swapped depth for the ‘shallow’ and timelessness for trends.

‘Here’ arrives not as a shout, but as a deliberate silence. MNOV understands that in a room full of noise, a whisper can be just as effective, if not more so. MNOV grounds us in the excellence of our past before showing us where the soundscape should be heading next. With ‘Here,’ MNOV pierces through the veil of monotony draped over the industry and gives us a glimpse of what’s possible when artists take creative risks.

Musically, MNOV draws from predecessors such as Bez Idakula and Asa while displaying a vulnerability reminiscent of the intimacy found in the work of Drake and John Mayer. Much like his peers, Tay Iwar and Tems, MNOV treats this vulnerability as a strength. He chooses to sit with the difficult, introspective themes that the mainstream often casts aside.

“Seems like all we’re good for, hurt each other and complain but/I still remember the good times hand in hand, unafraid of…”

Most love songs focus on two extremes: being together or being apart. MNOV finds his inspiration in the reality of the middle ground. The production, a collaboration between IKON (Tems, Show Dem Camp, Braye) and MNOV himself, is an exercise in negative space. By doing less, it speaks more and ultimately creates a space for MNOV to bare his soul. With nothing to obstruct our view, we are left face-to-face with a man and the weight of his thoughts.

This commitment to intimacy was recently validated on a global scale. MNOV’s appearance as a cover artist for COLORS acted as a silent, powerful announcement of his arrival. MNOV reminds us that music is most powerful when it stops trying to be everything to everyone and starts being honest.
