50 years after, Ifeoma Chukwuogo sets out to tell the Biafra survivor story with ‘No Victors’.

Ifeoma Chukwuogo – the indie Nollywood director behind Bariga Sugar and Adindu has returned to the scenes with the recent release of her 2020 debut. No Victors is a story about survivors from the Nigerian civil war, fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra, between 6 July 1967 to 15 January 1970. The war is believed to have originated from a long period alleged political, economic, ethnic and religious deprivations; resulting in the death of almost two million people. Fast forward 50 years later, Nigeria’s history still undermines the agony faced by the Igbo tribe.

The first episode titled ‘The Voluntary Child Soldier’ recounts the survival story of one of Biafra’s youngest soldiers, Weluche Ume. A Biafra child soldier who was recruited as a teenager after many failed attempts to join the army. Ume’s story is emotive with features from loved ones who were displaced by the war but reunited later. Ifeoma’s first attempt to dig and tell a story that’s hardly ever told to a much younger generation many decades after is a monumental and daring effort and while we wait for the full thing, watch the featurette of the first episode here.
