Nothing Human is an English adaptation by Kanyin Ajayi of Marie NDiaye’s French play Rien d’Humain. Produced by Organic Theatre Workshop, supported by JAM!, an app for West African creatives, in partnership with Alliance Française de Lagos, a non-profit institution. The play offers a compelling and intimate exploration of a fractured friendship, set against a backdrop of deep-seated resentment and unacknowledged privilege.
Nothing Human discusses themes of betrayal, rejection, vulnerability, and exploitation. It spotlights the corrosive effects of past resentments on present relationships. While the ending offers emotional satisfaction, it deliberately maintains an element of ambiguity. This ambiguity allows the audience to ponder the nature of truth and illusion within the characters’ lives.
In a post-show interview, the director revealed her inspiration for adapting the story, citing its unique dynamics, which are rarely seen in Nigerian theatre. Her favourite scene—which she changes constantly—was one of the final acts, where all the emotions converged.
The actors also shared their personal connections to the play, with Laoye finding the French writing relatable to the Nigerian context, even down to the casual insults.
Nothing Human is a thought-provoking play that leaves a lasting impression, prompting reflection on the complexities of human relationships and the enduring shadows of the past. It leaves the audience with a subliminal question: is to be human, to be full of complexities?
Nothing Human premieres on August 2nd & 3rd at 6 pm at Alliance Française de Lagos, Ikoyi.
