The Malawian High Court in Zomba has ordered that a school girl to be admitted into Blantyre Girls’ Primary School after her admission was denied because of her dreadlocks. The schoolgirl had been told to cut off dreadlocks by the school’s management, according to Nyasa Times news website.
An injunction granted by Judge Zione Ntaba at the High Court in Zomba orders the Attorney General, Ministry of Education, Education Division Manager (South) and the Headmaster of Blantyre Girls Primary School to allow the applicant, Blantyre resident Makeda Mbewe, to enroll as a pupil at Blantyre Secondary School.
According to OkayAfrica, The court has also ordered that the school make up for the classes the learner has missed and provide any other necessary support they may require.
The case itself is still ongoing. A court order now requires that the government allow learners from the marginalised Rastafarian community to be admitted into schools without having to have their dreadlocks removed.
Rastafarians in Malawi have been accusing the government of discrimination, according to The Nation newspaper.
