Netflix Lets Go of the Man Who Signed Off on African Stories

For seven years, if you wanted an African story on Netflix, one Nigerian was near the top of the chain. As of this week, he isn’t there.

Netflix has laid off Ben Amadasun, its vice-president and content lead for Africa, Techpoint Africa reported on 21 October. Amadasun joined in 2019 and rose to oversee content across Africa and the Middle East. His exit is part of a global restructuring Netflix announced on 14 October, cutting about 6% of staff, roughly 1,000 people. Kaye Ann Williams, director of scripted content for sub-Saharan Africa, takes over the African brief.

    Why it matters here

In September, Amadasun said Netflix had produced or licensed over 300 original titles across Africa. For many Nigerian producers, directors and writers, his office was the door. Shows got greenlit or didn’t, partly on its read of what African audiences, and the world, would watch.

Techpoint notes Netflix hasn’t announced any cut to its African content budget. It also hasn’t said what that budget is. So we don’t know if Africa is losing money or just a senior seat at the table. For the people pitching shows, both matter.

    What to watch

Whether Williams keeps the same appetite for licensed Nollywood titles alongside big-budget originals. Whether any projects already in development stall in the handover. And whether Netflix ever says out loud what it spends on African content.

Our read: one exit doesn’t mean Netflix is leaving Africa. But the person who championed African stories inside the building is gone, and the company hasn’t said who speaks for those stories next, or with what budget.
