Nigerian Man Extradited to U.S. Over Alleged Sextortion Linked to Teen’s Death

//

A Nigerian man, Afeez Olatunji Adewale, has been extradited to the United States over his alleged involvement in a sextortion scheme linked to the death of a young American.

Nigerian authorities handed him over to U.S. officials following coordinated investigations between law enforcement agencies in both countries. He is accused of participating in an online network that targeted victims through social media, posing as young women to obtain explicit images which were later used for blackmail.

The case is tied to the death of an American teenager who allegedly took his own life after being threatened with the release of intimate images unless he paid money. Investigators say the scheme was part of a broader pattern of online extortion targeting young victims.

U.S. prosecutors have described Adewale as the third Nigerian extradited in connection with the wider sextortion investigation. Authorities allege that members of the group systematically targeted minors, using deception and intimidation to extract payments.

The extradition highlights increasing cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in tackling transnational cybercrime. Nigerian anti-graft agencies have faced sustained international pressure to address online fraud and sextortion rings often operating across borders.

Officials say the case underscores the growing global consequences of cyber-enabled crimes, particularly those that exploit minors and vulnerable individuals. The legal proceedings in the United States are expected to continue as prosecutors pursue charges linked to extortion and conspiracy.
