Nigerian-American author Nnedi Okorafor has won the 2026 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Fiction for her novel Death of the Author. The win adds another major recognition to Okorafor’s long list of awards and reinforces her influence in contemporary African and African-diaspora literature.
The NAACP Image Awards celebrate outstanding achievements by people of colour in literature, film, television, and music. Okorafor’s novel stood out among nominees in the fiction category, highlighting her continued impact on speculative fiction and storytelling that centres African experiences and perspectives.
Death of the Author explores themes of creativity, identity, and the complicated relationship between writers and the stories they produce. The book follows a Nigerian-American author navigating sudden literary success while confronting questions about authorship, control, and how readers interpret a writer’s work.
Okorafor is widely known for her blend of African cultural traditions with science fiction and fantasy, a style often described as African-futurism. Over the years, she has built a global readership through award-winning novels, short stories, and comics that centre African characters and settings while pushing the boundaries of speculative fiction.
The NAACP recognition adds to Okorafor’s already decorated career. She has previously won major literary honours including the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards, making her one of the most internationally recognised writers of African Literature.
