A nationwide power outage could be imminent as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) intensifies mobilisation for an industrial strike over unpaid wages, pension remittances and other unresolved labour issues.
The union has directed its members across power generation, transmission and distribution companies to prepare for possible action, raising concerns of widespread electricity disruption if talks with authorities fail.
According to reports, the planned strike stems from long-standing grievances, including delays in salary payments, non-remittance of pension contributions, and poor working conditions affecting electricity workers in parts of the country. Union leaders say previous engagements with relevant stakeholders have not produced concrete results, prompting the renewed mobilisation.
The warning has heightened fears of a potential nationwide blackout, given the strategic role electricity workers play in maintaining Nigeria’s fragile power infrastructure. The sector, already struggling with grid instability, low generation capacity and mounting debts, could face further strain if operations are halted.
Industry observers note that industrial actions in the power sector often have immediate ripple effects across businesses, hospitals, telecommunications and households. Nigeria’s national grid has experienced repeated collapses in recent years, and any prolonged strike could worsen energy insecurity.
While negotiations are reportedly ongoing, the union maintains that failure to address the outstanding issues may leave workers with no choice but to withdraw their services.
If the strike proceeds, it would mark another setback for Nigeria’s power sector, which has faced persistent operational and financial challenges since its privatisation over a decade ago.
