On the back of his new single – “Bad Thing”, we got to talk to the burgeoning musical bombshell Shayo Davids about the past, the present and the future.
Who is Shayo Davids?
Shayo is a 24-year-old Nigerian musician, I’ve never been out of Nigeria, so I’m 100% Nigerian. Born and bred in Lagos even though I’m from Osun state. I’ve been making music for close to a decade now. Started recording music way back when I was fifteen and I’m still at it now that I’m almost 25. I grew up with my dad and my mom. I do what normal people do; I love to chill. My lifestyle is music, I love to make music – that’s my whole thing. I love fashion, I love rocking DWAVE and most importantly, I love everyone I consider family.
What has the journey been like up to this point?
It’s been blood, sweat and tears man! All glory be to God regardless, there have been a lot of twists and turns and ups and downs that I can’t even reveal yet but I’m still striving and pushing this thing. It’s definitely not been easy but it’s been real and I honestly can’t get enough of it.
What type of music would you say you make?
I think you can call it Afro Fusion because I make a wide range of music and it’s hard to box into one place but no matter what I make, I infuse authentic afro into it. You can say I make Shayo Davids music, I make moneyboy music!

What inspired ‘Bad Thing’ – your latest single?
Bad thing is really about me realizing that I have friends that believe in me, and I’m grateful for them. You know, the people that are there for me and motivate me, it’s in the first line of the song. At the point where I made the song, I was experiencing betrayal and heartbreak and it’s the same people propping me back up and getting me out of it. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I just do my thing so these things cut deeper for me. It’s inspired by all the girls wey don do me Bad Thing.
What’s Next?
Can’t let too much out of the bag because it ruins the element of surprise but big things are in the pipeline. I’ve got some big singles lined up for the next phase, big collaborations, standard, beautiful music videos for the songs you already like. I make music from what I’m experiencing, so there’s a certain realness to it because I dey tell you as e dey happen and I’m just going to package it and just give it to you guys.
