Simone Arianne Biles is a 21-year-old African-American artistic gymnast, getting into the spotlight at the 2016 Olympic individual all-around, vault and floor gold medalist, she was part of the gold-medal-winning team dubbed the “Final Five” at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Since then she’s gone on to break more records.
On Thursday, the Olympian won her fourth All-Around World Title at the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Doha, Qatar. Biles, 1.7 points more than runner-up Mai Murakamai of Japan and fellow Team USA member Morgan Hurd to win the gold medal, despite falling two times during her all-around final. The historic moment made her the first woman to accomplish such a feat. Biles has won every world championship she has competed in. What makes her victory even more remarkable is that she was admitted to hospital just before the competition with a kidney stone.
This year has definitely had its ups and downs, going to therapy and other things besides. Just being in the gym has been a little bit rough, but you try to focus on one thing at a time to get through it. I hope this gives confidence [to other women] that you can still do well and not be penalised for it and for parents to put gymnasts in the sport and feel comfortable, Miles Said.
