Storyteller Biyi Bandele is confirmed dead

Biyi Bandele, a writer and Film director, has been confirmed dead. This information was made public on Monday in a statement issued by his family.

Temi Bandele, the deceased’s daughter, referred to Biyi Bandele as “a prodigiously talented writer and film-maker.” Biyi Bandele is most known for directing Half of a Yellow Sun and his most recent, Blood Sisters, among other works.

The statement reads in part: 

“He was a storyteller to his bones, with an unblinking perspective, singular voice and wisdom which spoke boldly through all of his art, in poetry, novels, plays and on screen. He told stories which made a profound impact and inspired many all over the world.  His legacy will live on through his work.”

Temi, in an effort to express the grief of the Bandele family, asked “everyone to please respect the privacy of his family and friends as we grieve his loss.”

Biyi Bandele died at the age of 54
