The United Kingdom has donated non-lethal military equipment worth approximately N1 billion (£450,000) to the Nigerian Armed Forces. The equipment, which includes advanced technical tools, is aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts in the North East.
The donation was formally handed over to Major General Wahidi Shaibu, the Joint Task Force North East (JTF NE) Theatre Commander, during a ceremony in Maiduguri.
In addition to the equipment, the UK is providing a series of training courses tailored to the Nigerian military’s operational needs. A team of 20 British Army personnel is currently in Maiduguri leading a course focused on critical skills for counter-insurgency operations. The UK plans to deliver seven more training programs by February 2025.
Colonel Martin Leach, Deputy Head of British Defence Staff (West Africa), emphasized the importance of the UK-Nigeria partnership in combating extremism. “The UK stands with Nigeria in the continued fight against violent extremist organizations in the North East,” he said.
The UK is also working with Nigerian forces to counter the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). A UK team is embedded in the Theatre Counter-IED Coordination Cell in Maiduguri to help develop intelligence on terrorist networks responsible for IED attacks.
