World DJ Day: Get to know Smallz the DJ better.

Bet we didn’t know a thing like this existed until we checked our calendar. Every year, March 9 is set aside for celebrating the world’s music mixers, the priests and priestesses of euphoric, music-induced transcendence. But this day marks much more than a fiesta, it is an important charity event that was birthed in 2002 by Nordoff-Robbins, the UK’s largest independent music therapy charity. The NGO specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults suffering from various disabilities, disorders and difficult life circumstances with the transformative and healing power of music. All moneys earned by the DJs / Clubs / Radio stations in that day go to various children’s fonds and international institutions.

Although there’s not any events or initiatives happening in Nigeria or West Africa that we are aware of, we decided to feature one of Nigeria’s most promising DJs and the life of Lagos parties, no other person than Smallz The DJ.

If you’re deep into culture and festivals in Lagos, the 24 year-old is definitely no new name. Smallz as he is popularly known DJs one of the largest parties in Nigeria – the Mainland, Island and Capital block parties in Lagos and Abuja. He also shuffles between going on tour with Davido, arguably the continent’s biggest music star and residencies with tens of clubs, bars and spots in the urban side of the city.

A cool and recluse personality, Smallz tops the conversation about the next generation of homegrown DJs spreading their tentacles in and out of the continent. He is taking a music-first, business-minded approach to succeeding in the globally competitive world of disc jockeys. Indeed he is a trailblazer and one who will be compared to the likes of Jimmy Jatt, DJ Spinall, DJ Obi and Neptune; all Nigerian DJs that moved the industry forward in the last decades.
