Best New Music: Fall in Love With Dr.Cube’s New Single, To Your Love.

It’s often said one can easily differentiate between a producer-turned-artist and an artist-turned-producer. The former tends to be a bit more intentional in the creative process of the music. Afro-fusion artist, Yinka Bernie is an undeniable testament to this. The same can be concurred for British-Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, producer and more recently singer-songwriter, Dr. Cube

From his early days on the music scene, he’s dabbled in underground production; testing the waters releasing music via his SoundCloud and Tumblr accounts, where he gained a sizable following. His 2017 debut effort as a full-fledged artist, ‘Fall in Love’, a soothingly stripped down melancholic ballad, gave us a taste of the artillery he had packed in his musical war chest.

Now back and completely ready to kickstart his musical adventure, he provides his new single, ‘To Your Love’; a loose-lyriced mid-tempo track depicting a one sided conversation with his partner. The track opens up with a looped mid-cadenced piano chord sample, following a harmonised blend of his & Melissa Frame’s vocals singing ‘Shine in the light/Baby shine in the light’; their vocal chemistry highly reminiscent of Yinka Bernie and Joyce Olong.

‘You’re so blue baby/You let me in then let me go’, his clear-cut baritone voice pierces through, punctuated by fantastic classic saxophone lines (provided by Koye Sax & Joshua Olawanle) and soothing bass guitar licks (courtesy of Greg Hummell), as he acknowledges the growing rift in their relationship & deliberates on what they can do to fix it.

Drawing evident influences from his music idols, Fela Kuti and Asa, Dr.Cube delivers an upbeat Afro-fusion bop, certain to have your body gyrating. Juxtaposing this track with his debut offering, his versatility is clear-cut, further verifying him as an artist to keep on our radar. We can’t wait to see what he cooks up next.
