On the spur of the moment, being African is so cool. It’s exciting to see more and more people across the globe trace their origins and cheerfully own it. Just a few days ago, news about SZA’s Nigerian-Igbo descent flooded the cyberspace after she adopted the names ‘Amarachi Chinonso’ on her social media pages. For many, it was incredibly unbelievable that Solána Rowe is a ‘sister’. The latest addition to the list is Wyclef Jean, an Afro – Haitian rapper, musician and actor and Presidential aspirant who recently let it out to the world via his Twitter handle that his DNA test revealed he‘s 80% Nigerian. That’s not all there is, Wyclef decided to solidify his ancestry by jumping on the Kizz Daniel’s viral #FuckYouChallenge.
Afro-Haitians are Haitians of African descent. They are mostly the descendants of enslaved Africans, mostly West & Central Africa (Benin Kingdom, Yoruba) brought to the island by Spain and Europe to work on plantations. As of 2013, Afro-Haitians are the major ethnic group in Haiti, accounting for 95% of the country’s population. The remaining 5% of the country are made up of mulattoes (mixed black and white) and other minor groups (Europeans, Asians and Arabs). There is also a part of their culture that is significantly of the Igbo origin.
