X Plans to Shut Down the Circle Feature on October 31

X, formerly Twitter, says it will officially shut down its Circle feature on October 31, as announced in September. The feature, which allows users to share posts with a select group of people instead of all of their followers, was launched in August 2022 but was plagued by glitches and privacy concerns.

In April 2023, a bug in Circles caused some users’ private tweets to be shared publicly. This led to widespread criticism of the feature and calls for it to be shut down. X CEO Elon Musk has also been vocal about his dislike of Circles, saying that he believes Twitter should be a public platform where everyone can see what everyone else is saying.

In a blog post announcing the shutdown of Circles, X said that it was “deprecating the feature due to low usage and technical challenges.” The company also said that it was “committed to providing a safe and private experience for all users,” and that it was “working on new ways to help users share their thoughts and ideas with the people they care about.”

For users who want to keep their Circle contacts, X recommends unfollowing them, then refollowing those profiles, which will effectively remove them from their Circle, then add them as a regular contact.

The shutdown of Circles is the latest in a series of changes that Musk has made to X since he acquired the company in April 2023. Musk has also laid off a significant number of employees and made changes to the company’s culture. It remains to be seen how these changes will impact X in the long term.
