Alleged ₦250m Debt Dispute Between Umahi, Businesswoman Sparks Arrest

///

A dispute between the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, and an Abuja-based businesswoman has sparked controversy following allegations of unpaid debt, arrest, and police involvement.

The businesswoman had publicly accused the minister of owing her ₦250 million linked to campaign-related dealings. In a video that circulated online, she was heard demanding payment and warning that she would continue to press for her money.

Shortly after the incident, she was arrested by the police. Reports indicated that despite a court order granting her release, there were claims that security operatives initially delayed or blocked her freedom.

Minister Umahi has denied owing the woman any money. He also rejected allegations that he used the police to intimidate or harass her over the claim. The minister said he did not deploy any security agency against the businesswoman and insisted the allegations against him were false.

Activist Omoyele Sowore later criticised both the police and the minister over the arrest, questioning why a civil dispute escalated into detention. The incident reportedly led to a confrontation at a police station, where Sowore challenged the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

In his own account, Umahi said he encountered Sowore at the police station and maintained that he had done nothing wrong. He described the situation as being misrepresented.

The case has drawn public attention, with many raising concerns about the use of law enforcement in disputes involving public officials. Police authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement addressing the allegations surrounding the woman’s arrest and release.
