You cannot talk about the new crop of emerging artists from West Africa pushing their sounds and art beyond borders and the formulaic Afrobeat, without mentioning Ama Serwah Genfi –– the 25 year-old Ghanaian singer popularly known as Amaarae.
Her especial music which combines an experimental mix of neo-soul, buttery vocals, pensive lyrics and African drums is sonically tailored to evoke and challenge norms and traditions, particularly around sex and body positivity. Her 2017 six-track debut EP, Passionfruit Summers earned her recognition from Apple Music, which named her Africa’s Favorite New Artist in April 2018 and a featured artist for Apple Music’s Beats 1.
Amaarae is giving us a sneak peek into her forthcoming body of work Angel You Don’t Know, with the release of Leave Me Alone–– a song that touches deep on freedom, space and self care. According to the singer, “Leave Me Alone’ is a freedom record. It’s just about wanting to live your life and be left to do so, there’s so much going on in the world right now. We all need a break — or some form of escape and this song speaks to that desire. It’s about having the space to breathe, process and get your mental and emotional states right.”
Blending paced vocal runs with silky smooth cadences, every note on this song is easy on the ears and relaxing as can be. Between the musicality of her art and the incredible, complementary presence of her visual aesthetic which is always evident in her videos, Amaarae is firing on all cylinders right now, so don’t sleep.
