Dangote Petroleum Refinery is preparing for a massive October initial public offering (IPO) aimed primarily at Nigerian retail investors. Chief Executive Officer David Bird stated that the company is prioritizing local participation over an immediate foreign listing. The refinery submitted an application to Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission for a $5 billion offering.
The decision puts local ownership at the forefront of what could become the largest stock debut in African history. Bird described the move as a “people’s IPO” designed to allow everyday citizens to share directly in the refinery’s financial growth.
Despite long-standing industry rumors targeting a prompt listing in London, the company will delay international listings for at least three years. Executives stated that the refinery must establish a clear track record of performance before approaching foreign capital markets.
This strategic pause follows a successful $2.5 billion private placement completed in July. That private investment round valued the Lagos-based facility at approximately $40 billion.
Operational momentum continues to build across domestic and international markets. The facility currently supplies the majority of Nigeria’s domestic gasoline and diesel demand. Furthermore, the refinery expanded its regional reach by becoming Europe’s largest supplier of jet fuel during the summer of 2026.
Looking ahead, leadership plans to double current production capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day over the next three years. The expansion effort will draw funding from corporate debt and equity raised through the October offering.
