Lesotho’s First Lady Has Been Charged With Murdering Husband’s Ex-wife

Story Story…

In 2017, the Prime Minister of Lesotho’s wife, Lipolelo Thabane, was shot dead outside her home in the capital Maseru two days before his inauguration. One evening while she was returning home, she was ambushed, shot several times at close range and died on the side of a road.

The couple was going through a terrible divorce at the time. They both had been living separately since 2012.

The murder was a complete shock through the tiny mountain kingdom surrounded entirely by South Africa.

The attack was originally blamed on unknown armed men, but recent court papers filed by the country’s police commissioner, Holomo Molibeli, have raised further questions.

Prime Minister Thomas Thabane described it as a “senseless killing” in his inauguration speech. He remarried Maesaiah Thabane, the current first lady less than three months after her death.

Maesaiah Thabane, The Murderer?

The first lady of Lesotho, Maesaiah Thabane has been charged with murder in connection with the 2017 killing of Lipolelo Thabane, police said on Tuesday.

“She has been charged with murder alongside eight others who are in Lesotho and South Africa,” Paseka told reporters, adding that the investigation had been “satisfactorily completed”.

The police claim they have a “strong case” against the first lady.

She was also charged with the attempted murder of a second woman who was with the former first lady the night she was killed.

An arrest warrant for the first lady was issued January 10th, she fled the country after, refusing to report to police for questioning in connection with the murder.

Maesaiah Thabane was picked up on the border with South Africa following an arrangement between her lawyer and the police, Aljazeera reports.

She was being held in custody appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody after the murder charge.

And Mr. Prime Minister?

With pressure mounting on the Prime Minister by the governing party who don’t consider fit to lead anymore, Thomas Thabane announced he was planning to step down, he didn’t specify when he would resign.

Last month, hundreds of opposition supporters marched through the streets of Maseru as the prime minister was questioned by the police, demanding he steps down with immediate effect.
