TikTok Made Me Buy It… But Did I Really Need It

//

Let’s talk about consumerism, social media, and why your bank account (and the planet) might be side-eyeing you.

We’ve all been there, scrolling at 2 AM, seeing that viral “holy grail” product, and clicking Add to Cart before we even blink. But after the hype fades, was it worth it?

Consumerism is that constant whisper telling you that you need more. It is a system that pushes us to keep buying more stuff, believing it’ll make life better. It’s the belief that the more we own, the happier we’ll be.

With the advent of social media and influencer culture, product promotions are more in our faces than ever. While that initial unboxing moment might produce short-term dopamine, in reality, there’s a budding addiction to the “next big thing” high, your bank account is crying, our planet is taking Ls from overproduction & waste, there’s an increase in anxiety & FOMO from the endless comparison, and it contributes to the clutter that clogs your space and your brain.

Depending on your preference, a lot of impulse buys have been made. But this is a “no judgement” zone as we’ve all fallen for giant Stanley Cups (did we suddenly get thirstier?), Labubu dolls, skincare and fast fashion products.

Before hitting checkout, ask yourself:
• Do I actually need this, or just want it?
• Will it improve my life, or is it a trend?
• Do I already own something similar?
• Can I afford it comfortably?
• What’s the environmental cost?

What’s the most revolutionary thing you can buy right now? Nothing.
