“Captivating, vibrant, and iconic” were some of the words used by guests to describe Uzo Njoku and her work at the November opening night of her first solo exhibition in Lagos, titled “An Owambe Exhibition.” The Nigerian-American artist and designer successfully opened the exhibition with an immersive, participatory experience that blended art viewing with community engagement and connection.

From attendees dressed in their exclusive Owambe Exhibition fabrics, to Njoku inviting the audience to join her on the canvas. The audience interaction helped create a colourful and celebratory atmosphere, reinforcing the theme of shared cultural ownership and collective storytelling. The November opening night offered guests an immersive, participatory experience that set the tone for the two-month-long exhibition, ending January 2026.
Known for her vibrant pattern work and striking narratives that bridge the African and diasporic experience, Njoku is set to unveil nine new paintings at the official December exhibition, which explore the complexities of Nigerian life, from intergenerational tensions and queer identity to beauty standards, spirituality, and everyday resilience. These
paintings reimagine modern Nigerian life through texture, tradition, and honest personal reflection.
The exhibition environment extends far beyond the canvas, with pattern, textiles, sound, and display installations creating a gallery experience that feels celebratory, familiar, and freshly recontextualized. Njoku also introduced a wide range of products created specifically for the Owambe exhibition, all available at the venue and online.

These items include Ankara fabrics (which also grant access to the December exhibition night), different types of clothing merchandise, phone cases, laptop sleeves, tote bags and more. These products give guests the chance to take home a piece of the exhibition and continue celebrating her work beyond the event.

Njoku has also scheduled exclusive programming to hold every Thursday throughout the run of the exhibition, offering ongoing engagement, conversations, and evolving forms of artistic interaction.

The exhibition will continue with another special showing on December 18th, fabrics and items that grant access are available on https://uzoart.com.ng/collections/owambe-exhibition/owambe
